A set of programs that serve as an interface between hardware and software applications, managing and allocating computer resources (processor, memory, peripherals, etc.) to ensure consistent operation.

An OS also provides an environment for applications to run. Finally, it allows the user to communicate with the machine.

Windows, macOS, and Linux are widely used operating systems.
